Which system do tournaments use?

The Swiss system: everyone plays the same number of rounds, nobody is eliminated after a loss, and pairings are made by score. Ties are broken by the Buchholz coefficient.

How many people can it handle?

From a small group to a large event. Round-count guide: 8-16 players - 5 rounds, 17-32 - 6, 33-64 - 7. The bot keeps the pairing correct at any size.
