If the evening is tight, take the Swiss systemover 5 rounds: everyone plays 5 games, opponents are matched by score, the winner emerges faster. For a friendly group that's plenty.
How long it takes
Counting on blitz 5+0: one game up to 10 minutes plus a couple to seat. A round-robin for 8 (7 rounds) is about 1.5-2 hours. A 5-round Swiss is around 1-1.5 hours. Blitz 3+2 is even faster. With only 2-3 boards, play in turns - the bot waits for the round's results, then deals the next draw.
